Inspired by Édouard Glissant and cultural theorist Stuart Hall’s reflections on representation, identity, and cultural legibility, the work investigates how ideas of monoculture and legibility are formed and maintained.

‍

“Does visual language reflect a truth about the world which is already there, or does it produce meanings about the world through representing it?”

If certain bodies are permitted to be perceived as transparent, objective, or universal, is that a condition available to everyone? And how is this transmitted in everyday life? and on stage? Can the experience of constantly being read in a particular way be used to create other ways of appearing, disappearing, or escaping fixation? Who is allowed to be vulnerable? Who is allowed to be mortal?

‍

The group consists of dancers, a sound artist, a dramaturg, and a scenographer. Together, the group will develop a shared vocabulary that resists fixed forms. Through slow processes – improvisation, score-based structures, and collaborative image-making, a space is created where presence can remain complex, unreadable, and untranslatable. The aim is not to produce quick results, but to commit to the messy and to study, experiment, fail, and negotiate with care.

The work engages with images of illusion, constructing historical and fictional scenarios within a fragmented flow of bodies in motion. Images that emerge and dissolve simultaneously.

Through a dreamlike and associative dramaturgy, the piece explores the constant movement between the construction and collapse of worlds. Scenes, rhythms, and bodies slide into one another, transforming intuitively rather than linearly, like fragments of memory or sensations not yet fixed in place.

The performance invites the audience into a state of perceptual instability: to leave uncertain of what they actually saw. Perception continually shifts; images linger even as they disappear. The work searches for a methodical approach to something emotionally driven and unstable, by flow guided by association, intuition, and dance.

This residency is co-curated by Madhumita Nandi and HAUT's artistic leader Lili Blum.
