In this residency, Marthe Koning collaborates with Gerben Vaillant. Together, they explore the ambiguity of the human desire to co-exist, depicted in an endless series of failed duets.

A dance of attraction and repulsion. In an intimate but fragile living room, two people spin on their own axis, floating like the dust that hangs in the air and has not yet descended after an all-changing conflict. That indeterminate moment is their starting point.

In the investigation they are fascinated with what one lacks and the other possesses, and the deep human emotions that flow from this place of friction: desire, jealousy, and the struggle for freedom. The greed to fully absorb what the other has to offer alternates with the fear of losing oneself.

The collaboration between Marthe and Gerben springs from a shared fascination with each other's work.

Brussel-based Marthe Koning and Gerben Vaillant were invited into a two weeks IN CONNECTION residency at HAUT in Copenhagen with the artistic project Letters on the verge. This opportunity blossomed out of HAUT's long term collaboration with workspacebrussels – laboratory for research, experiment & creation in the performing arts.
