Between 2015 and 2023, HAUT hosted a biennial YC FESTIVAL to celebrate the expanded field of choreography by sharing and presenting works-in-process. In 2015 and 2017, we hosted Young Choreographers, and for the 2019 edition, we asked: Why Choreography? As the 2021 edition was cancelled amid the pandemic shutdown of theatres, we returned in 2023 with a festival format to reflect about the act of cultivation with the question Why Cultivate?

WHY CULTIVATE?
The thematic framework for the YC Festival 2023 This year’s YC Festival poses the question “Why Cultivate?” Based on the idea of cultivation and all its ramifications, we emphasize nurturing, fostering collaboration, and exchanging knowledge and perspectives. This framework was developed in collaboration with artist Vala T. Foltyn and dancer and choreographer Lydia Ö. Diakité as part of the co-creation of the open call. The curatorial process for the open call was shared with Vala T. Foltyn and curator Jari Malta. HAUT aims to continue raising awareness of curatorial practice, which is an integral part of our work. Working with co-creation and co-curation strategies continually challenges and enriches our perspectives and enables us to bring new knowledge into our future work.
VACANCY er en serie af interventioner i de liminale og ledige rum i YC Festivals program. Har du nogensinde oplevet usikkerhed i intervallerne mellem festivalens forestillinger? Vi sætter spørgsmålstegn ved, hvordan det at mødes omkring et middagsbord, til en fest eller i en kø kan omforme vores kollektive oplevelse. Hvordan kan det at mødes under forestillinger og udvekslinger give genlyd som en fælles oplevelse under hele festivalen? We embrace the awkwardness of these empty spaces, which shelter us from November’s chilly winds.
VACANCY is an artistic collaboration founded by Kai Merke, Emile Pineault, Caterina Daniela Mora Jara, and Filip Vest. It grew out of a long-standing organizational collaboration between HAUT in Copenhagen, IAC in Malmö, workspacebrussels in Brussels, and La Serre in Montreal, with a focus on establishing a dialogue that was not merely about the artists, but actively involved them. Samarbejdet mellem de fire involverede kunstnere udmøntede sig i projektet VACANCY, som var en del af Open Studio, workspacebrussels' festival for igangværende værker i april 2023. Her skabte kunstnerne nye rum og andre måder at interagere og være sammen på inden for rammerne af en festival. HAUT har inviteret de fire kunstnere til at fortsætte deres arbejde med VACANCY ved at lade det udfolde sig på ny under YC Festival 2023.

Shared Meals - Gathering around the table for a meal sparks new conversations, especially if you dare to sit next to someone you don’t know yet. Every day during the festival, we invite you to a warm, nourishing, vegan meal and the chance to explore together and reflect on the performative experiences you’ve encountered. Be brave, sit next to someone you haven’t spoken to yet, and ask a question.
Saturday 25.11 at 16:00 - An hour with: Porous Nests
Over the course of an hour, we invite you to meet Porous Nests, a choreographic and installation-based practice created and performed by Peter Scherrebeck, Kat Staub and Snore Elvin. During the conversation, the artists will share thoughts on how the work began, what interests them about working with porous nests as choreographic containers, and how the project has given rise to collective working methods. They will touch on collaborative structures, queer alter egos, and methods for developing choreographic material.
Friday 24.11 at 15:00 - Book launch + conversation about archiving
We celebrate the launch of our second publication HAUT - Residencies. An idiosyncratic snapshot that questions how we can create residencies that are meaningful for the time and context in which we live and work today. As part of the book launch, we have invited Associate Professor of Performance Studies, Laura Luise Schultz, to open up the conversation about archiving processes and sharing them, and what it does to our understanding of the development of the performing arts. What is worth archiving? And is it possible to archive knowledge in change?We hope that both the publication and the conversation about archiving will spark interesting conversations and reflections.

Friday 24.11 at 12-15 - Workshop with Emile Pineault.
Location: Sort anneks
During this workshop, participants will explore the different movement practices that Emile Pineault has developed in his creation rock bottom (2023). Using task-based improvisational scores, we will work with the relationship between the mouth, the anus and everything in between and unfold the concept of »bottomness«. »Bottomness« refers to an approach to engaging with one's body and the other, not through dominance and control, but by finding empowerment and agency in vulnerability and humiliation.
Practical information: To ensure that you all have the energy to move and for the rest of the festival day, we will have a rye bread sandwich ready for you at the workshop. It is included in the workshop fee.
Saturday 25.11 at 12-15 - Workshop on Conflicted Embodiment with caterina daniela mora jara.
Location: Sort aneks
In this 3-hour workshop, aimed at performing artists, we will unfold the idea of conflict in bodily actions. As a starting point, we will ask: What embodies your practice? With the aim of reflecting on the strategies of performing artists, we will critically approach our respective stories as artists and examine how the concept of conflict can raise further questions in relation to our practice.
